Dr Charlotte Codina

Professional Lead for Orthoptics

PGT Lead, School of Allied Health Professions, Nursing & Midwifery ACP lead for BIOS BIOS Low Vision Clinical Activity Group co-lead  Chair – Children’s Eye Health Workstream CYPVI network.

I am the professional lead for Orthoptics at The University of Sheffield where I oversee three taught programmes and support and supervise postgraduate research.  The programme I currently lead is the MMedSci ACP Ophthalmology (paediatrics), which enables current eye care practitioners – Optometrists, Orthoptists and Ophthalmic nurses, to upskill and take on advanced roles caring for children’s eyes in a hospital setting.  I am passionate about vision and hearing impairments and how we can improve eye care to enhance the experience for both children and adults with these sensory deficits.  I am the low vision lead and advanced practice lead for the British & Irish Orthoptic society and currently chair the children’s eye health stream as part of the UK children & young people with vision impairment network.  I have supported many UK and international students to improve vision care in their own settings and several healthcare service improvements and University research projects have been published as a result of my supervision.  Outside of work I am chair of a large foodbank and enjoy tennis and pilates.  I enjoy travelling and have completed short-term work in the Kwazulu Natal region of South Africa, Mozambique and Nepal. My PhD which explored the effects of profound congenital deafness on the visual system and led to my further interest in adaptations of and plasticity within the whole of the visual system from the cortex to the retina.

at Pacific University, my research focused on the difference in retinal lipofuscin accumulation among refractive error conditions. For my PhD studies, I worked closely with Dr. Hayes to develop a robust method to quantify fundus brightness, which served as a proxy for lipofuscin levels, using a Zeiss VISUCAM 244 Fundus Camera. This research not only expanded our understanding of retinal health but also provided valuable data contributing to our understanding of the impact of aging, refractive error, axial length, eye color, and macular pigment optical density on retinal brightness. My findings were instrumental in advancing our knowledge of the factors affecting lipofuscin accumulation in the eye. As a research student at Legacy Health, my research focused on the detection and characterization of extravascular motion using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) in glaucoma. This research has contributed to utilizing a non-invasive method for assessing blood flow in the optic nerve head and peripapillary retina, providing critical insights into the vascular dynamics associated with glaucoma. Now, as a postdoctoral fellow, I am working with the team to develop a novel technique to describe cellular-scale neurovascular reactivity within specific neurovascular networks in the living human eye using a noninvasive, label-free, high-resolution retinal imaging instrument. Our research efforts are directed toward gaining a more profound understanding of neurovascular reactivity at specific neurovascular networks in living human eyes, which could have the potential for larger-scale clinical studies testing new drugs or treatments for glaucoma.
